Men’s 1st’s (4) vs. (2) Leeds Adel 2nd’s
Goals from Danny Perry (2), Jermane Cotterell (2) were enough to seal an impressive result against a travelling Leeds Adel side.
Men’s 2nd’s (1) vs. (7) Aire Valley 2nd’s
The men’s 2nds hosted a strong, fit and organised Aire Valley site. Despite some strong defending, Aire valley had the run of the park and were clinical in front of net. Slaz had plenty of chance at the other end, but only Matt Smith was able to convert to give the side their only score.
Men’s 3rd’s (6) vs. (3) City of York 6th’s
A hat trick from John Sykes, along with goals from Jack Kitchen, Jack Sumner and Rob Brear were enough for a comprehensive result for the Men’s 3rds at York.
Men’s 4th’s (1) vs. (5) Halifax 4th’s
The men’s 4s visited Halifax this week looking for consecutive wins. The hosts took the lead and scored again shortly after. The visitors did manage to claw one back before half time but it wasn’t enough as they conceded a further 3 in the second half. Final score 5-1 Halifax. Slaz goal was scored by John Sykes
Ladies 1st’s (3) vs. (0) Thirsk 1st’s
Goals from Hannah Field, Jessica Rudge & Kerry Williamson.
Ladies 2nd’s (1) vs. (4) Leeds 5th’s
Slaz travelled today to Leeds for an early 10am game. For once we started the game with lots of energy and we’re quick off the ball, and an early break lead to Hannah being 1 on 1 with the keeper and managed to score. The remainder of the first half was end to end hockey, with interceptions made by both teams, but Leeds capitalised and resulted in 2 goals. Half time score 2-1 and the game was still anyone’s to take.
Second half Leeds stepped up the intensity and put more pressure on Slaz. Despite good opportunities for Slaz, resulting in Ruby FF hitting the post, sadly the game was not going in Slaz’s favour and Leeds managed to put another 2 past us, one from a short corner. However, despite a few further defensive short corners, Slaz defence held strong and cleared the ball well. Not defeated, Slaz continued attempts to change the score line with another few great breaks, but it wasn’t enough. A battle to the end, but not a win for us today. Final score 4-1. Player of the match went to Rebecca for great defensive work, tackling and run and being ‘The terminator’.
Ladies 3rd’s (3) vs. (1) Huddersfield 1st’s
Slazenger 3’s were keen to maintain their unbeaten run this season. They arrived early to clean the pitch from the fireworks festivities the night before, only to find that a Hero had visited – thank you Baggers!!
Right from the off Slazenger were hungry for the win and the home team struck their initial goal just minutes into the match when Lisa M converted a spectacular short corner. Slazenger maintained dominance throughout the first half, moving the ball well and consistently finding their forwards. As a result it wasn’t long before Evie and Maisie capitalised on opportunities and joined the score board. Taking Slazenger into a 3-0 half time lead.
Huddersfield rallied a little in the second half and managed to retain position for periods, only for the ball to be stolen by all the skilful Slazenger defenders in particular Nat who was voted player of the match due to her solid tackles and redistribution of the ball. Huddersfield did manage to pull one back taking the final score to 3-1.
Ladies 4th’s (0) vs. (4) Cleckheaton 1st’s
The Ladies 4th Team played Cleckheaton 1st Team this weekend and realised that Heckmondwike is not as far as was thought! Slazenger’s started strong, putting Cleckheaton on the defence for the first 10 minutes. Forwards, Mandy Greenwood, Emma Hammond and Kirsty Goddard worked hard to find the first goal and later joined by new player, Charlotte Young, it wasn’t through want of effort. Slazenger’s held strong but it was Cleckheaton who scored 10 minutes before the half time whistle.
Leaving the pitch at half time 1 goal down, Slazenger returned to the pitch needing to play more defensively. Rebecca Green and Gemma Wroe battled the midfield and Francesca Chromiakoka tried her hand in defence for the first time. Despite some excellent saves from keeper Charlotte Richardson, who goes from strength to strength each game, Cleckheaton scored 3 more goals – two of which were so very good that Slazenger gracefully accepted the defeat. Slazenger’s lost 4-0 but played a good game of hockey. Player – Rebecca Green. Tart – Francesca Chromiakova (and a special mention to Mark Hammond).
Under 10 Girls
Under 10’s Girls A Team (at Wakefield)
Yet again some brilliant hockey today, reduced numbers meant there were no subs, with all players working very hard for full 20min matches.
Slazenger (0) vs. (0) Thirsk
Well played, fast match from both sides being strong in defence and disrupting attempts at goal. Slaz showed some great team work in defence with Ella, Katie and Sophie working together. Lydia is growing in confidence as goal keeper and kept the attempts at goal out of the net. Despite some brilliant attempts at goal scoring by Darcie and Georgie, they were unable to find the back of the net in this match.
Slazenger (0) vs. (0) City of York
This was another fast game and well played by Slaz Team. York came in to the match confident after a 5-0 win in their first match. Brilliant defensive team work, with an equally matched strong team, great effort with Matilda & Sophie getting back to defend as well as pushing the ball up the field.
Slazenger (9) vs. (0) Wakefield [Scorers: Darcie (7), Katie and Georgie]
The goals came in early in the game as Darcie was quick to score, with several more fantastic goals scored throughout – totalling a massive 7 in total!. Katie pushed up from defence to score her first ever goal in a tournament. Georgie followed with a great shot at goal, following up a save with great determination to score (probably helped by the money mum & dad said they’d pay out for a goal!). Amazing! Matilda played with confidence to help set up some of the goal scoring opportunities. Sophie stopped and won the ball many time from the Wakefield players, with Ella and Katie showing excellent control of the ball to move the Wakefield players away from goal scoring opportunities. Lydia did not have as much to do in this match, with the majority of play being in Slazenger goal scoring half. Well done everyone for some hard fought games, showing resilience and team work throughout. Sophie was awarded player of the match showing some excellent challenges and skills, as well as a great positive attitude and determination – well deserved. Thanks to Mark for umpiring!
Under 10’s Girls B team (at Chesterfield)
Formation for tournament William – Goalie, Holly and Bridget Defence, Francis Savannah and Penny middle , Maia attacker. Great play today as we saw the team play together well and kept there structure which created space and opportunities.
Slazenger (0) vs. (2) Sheffield HC
The team started well tackling in two’s, great clearances from Hollie and Bridget.
There were a number of 1 on 1’s for William in Goal where he closed down the attacker really well and cleared into space. Maia had some great runs during the game and caused problems for the opposition. Sheffield were a strong side, but Slazenger kept them at bay with strong tackles.
Slazenger (0) vs. (0) Chesterfield
Francis and Maia were a great duo up front and Savannah linked in with them for the attack. Hollie and Bridget were ready to sweep up the few attacks that Chesterfield had. Penny was key between Defence and Attack. Slazenger dominated and unlucky not to score. Francis had a brilliant opportunity in front of goal. Game ended Nil/Nil with Slazenger being the better side and unfortunate not to score.
Slazenger (0) vs. (1) Rotherham
The game started with a great save by William and Hollie was close by to sweep off the pads . Minutes later William saved another goal off the line ushering it around the post. After a lot of pressure in the D , the defence cleared the ball to the middle of the pitch to Savannah. Savannah did a great roll out to pass the ball further up the pitch to continue the momentum. Strong tackling by Bridget, Hollie and Penny to keep the ball away from the D on the counter attack. Bridget’s powerful sweeping up the pitch was of great be benefit to team aiding the attack. Francis had some great attacking runs, unfortunately Rotherham closed her down. Throughout the match William cleared the ball well to the side relieving the pressure.
Slazenger (0) vs. (4) Sheffield
Sheffield started very strong mounting pressure on the Slazenger goal area. We saw great tackling from Penny and Francis, determined to protect the goal. William did brilliant to close the attackers down giving them little space. Half way through the game Bridget did a very powerful clearance to a big space up the pitch unfortunately Penny couldn’t get to it despite running super fast. Sheffield gave Slazenger a lot of pressure, the Slazenger team defended really well, but unfortunately the final score was 4 – Nil to Sheffield.
Slazenger (0) vs. (1) Chesterfield
Once again William had a lot of pressure in the goal area and saved them well keeping his eye on the ball. The team all defended well, getting stuck in and working for each other. Some great play up pitch which culminated with a great opportunity for Penny and Francis in the D, but unfortunately the Chesterfield defence cleared it. Unfortunately Savannah got an injury, so the team were a player down half way through the game. Great play all around the pitch , but unfortunately the game ended 1 – Nil to Chesterfield.
Slazenger (0) v (3) Rotherham
Rotherham applied pressure from the start, with Hollie solid in defence, making some crunching tackles. William did great saves when shots were sent from different angles, alternating from kicking and his stick to save. Bridget continued her great hit outs to ease the pressure in defence. Francis and Maia fought well in the middle for the ball. We saw great positioning from Penny up pitch for a great outlet. Unfortunately Rotherham scored with a scramble on the goal line and then again shortly after. The team did amazing with a player down as Savannah was unable to continue playing.
All the team did amazing, tackling all over the pitch and showing great team work. Player of the Match went to William with his outstanding work in goal making some incredible saves. His Goal Keeper work in training is paying off! Thanks to Rich, Donna & Rob for coaching.
U10 Boys Team
The Slazenger U10 boys were back in action today for their second tournament of the season, coming away with 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss.
Slazenger (6) vs. (0) Bradford [Scorers: Dominic, Matthew, Alistair, Noah (2), Harry]
Slaz came out on fire, an early goal from Dominic set the tone of the match and the boys went on to dominate the rest of the game using the width in midfield, pushing forward as a team resulting in some great team goals!
Slazenger (1) vs. (0) Leeds Adel [Scorer: Noah]
Leeds Adel proved the be the first challenge for the boys however Slaz were solid in defence and a great save from Nikolai kept the boys in it. After a great run down the line by Matthew and some perseverance from Noah the Slaz boys finally got a well earned goal! Adel came back strong and the boys spent the rest of the game protecting their lead.
Slazenger (0) vs. (0) Ben Rhydding
The 3rd game was an even match and provided the spectators with some end to end hockey! Harry and Freddie were solid at the back and did well to feed the ball out to the wings for Dominic and Alistair who battled hard, making some great runs down the wings. Unfortunately the boys couldn’t get the longed for goal and came away with a draw.
Slazenger (0) vs. (1) Leeds
The only loss of the day came against a strong Leeds team, the boys seemed to be tiring and often found themselves over loaded by Leeds. Leeds were very quick on the break and this eventually secured them the only goal of the game!
Slazenger (0) vs. (0) Aire Valley
The last game of the tournament was against Aire Valley, with a switch up in centre mid Zach worked tirelessly, making some crucial tackles. Aire Valley had quite a few shots on goal within a short space of time, luckily Nikolai was on top form in goal and he came away with a very well earned clean sheet. Despite both teams having chances neither could convert.
All the boys put in a great performance across the 5 games however player of the tournament went to Noah who worked extremely hard in every game and showed real leadership throughout the tournament! Thanks to Gemma for helping manage the team, Annabelle for the scoring and the match report and special thanks to Ruby for umpiring.
U14 Boys (5) vs. (3) Ben Rhydding
Another strong performance from the Slazenger U14 boys sees them staying top of the league, having won 3 out of 3. The boys started strong with debutant Evan T settling in well. Chances were created through great passing by Owen, Ally and Seth in the midfield to forwards Ollie, Aleks and Declan. Slaz just came short in the final touch to go into the lead. A quick breakout from BR saw the boys go 0-1 behind.
Slaz kept playing some brilliant hockey and some great passing and runs on the wings created further changes for Owen W and the second debutant, James. It was Aleks who scored the equaliser after 10 minutes. The boys carried on to pressure the BR defence and quick goals from Ollie and Seth saw Slaz 3-1 up at half time. The second half was a hard fought battle with plenty of changes for BR but the defence of George G, Harry, Isaac and Oliver kept them out of the D on many occasions. On the odd break through George H had an absolute stormer in goal and Slaz were unlucky to concede another goal.
Strong play by both James on Ollie on the right side gave the team the go forward and the midfield of Seth & Owen kept creating chances for the forwards. A great individual effort from Ally saw the boys strengthen their lead to 4-2. A little confusion in the defence saw BR get one back but the Slaz boys were determined to come away with the win today. And another great attack finished by Declan into the goal, ensuring the win at 5-3. Thanks to all the great support on the side-line, fab teas after the game and umpires Nicci & Damien.
