Ladies 2nds (2) vs. (4) Skipton 1st’s
Slaz were slow for the first 5 mins before finding our feet and upping our game. There were lovely passes across the pitch from defence to mid and great runs from the forwards into space. Ruby received the ball from Donna in defence and passed across the goal to Lucy, resulting in a goal! It was 1-0 to Slaz. We continued to battle despite Skipton winning a few successive short corners and we held them off. The first half finished 1-0 to Slaz.
Skipton started the second half hard and fast, with a new formation which startled Slaz. We took a while to react and this allowed Skipton to get their first goal. Unfortunately this gave Skipton a burst of energy and they got 3 more goals from even more short corners. Finally, we started to awaken and work for each other and we got a goal in the last few minutes after an amazing run from Courtney and a cross to Evie who scored. It finished 4-2 to Skipton.
Ladies 4ths (1) vs. (5) Sheffield Uni Bankers 3rd’s
The Ladies 4th Team travelled to Sheffield this weekend to face Sheffield Bankers 3rd Team. It is fair to say that it rained from start to finish but a good game was had by all. Thea Godson joined the team for a game and defended her first short corner for the Ladies game, supporting the defence with Sara Gilton, Emily Roberts and Catreena Ferguson. Slazenger’s did well to hold the Bankers off, only conceding one goal in the first half with keeper Charlotte Richardson as busy as ever.
Sheffield came out strong in the second half and soon scored two goals in quick succession. However, the Sheffield side were gracious in their win and despite scoring two further goals were as pleased for Slazenger’s as they were for themselves when Slazenger’s scored close to the final whistle. Gemma Wroe hammered one home from a short corner. The final score – 5-1 to Sheffield Bankers but if you play by the ‘last goal wins’ rule – a win for Slazenger’s. Good teas too. Player – Charlotte Richardson, she just plays so well every week. Tart – Francesca Chromiakova, for various misdemeanours
Development (1) vs. (0) Rotherham Development
The Development team made it two wins out of two this season, with another battling team performance. Playing with some older juniors and a number of strong adults, Rotherham started the game very well, with the first quarter played mostly in Slaz’s half. However, Slaz absorbed the pressure with strong defence from Harry Firth, George Garside and Richard Coughtrey repelling the attack. As the half wore on, Slaz grew in confidence, producing some effective counter attacks through the midfield of Aidy Buckley, Owen Coughtrey, Amelia Sykes, and Ben Satterthwaite. This created several scoring chances for Ollie Tuddenham, Lucas Thickett and Beth Buckley and it was Slaz who grabbed the lead towards the end of the half, with a tenacious run into the Rotherham D from Edie Satterthwaite before passing to Declan Buxton who put the ball neatly passed the keeper.
The second half was played end to end, with several scoring chances for both teams, however, the Slaz defence remained strong to deny Rotherham the equalizer. This was another gutsy team performance, and another well-earned win for the green army.
U12 Girls
It was the first tournament of the season today and we had three girls teams out in action! And what a brilliant start to the season with all three teams finishing top! 👏
U12 Girls A Team Report
The A team were playing at Wakefield in Division 1, hoping to maintain their winning form after finishing top at the end of last season. With no sub, the girls knew it would be a tough tournament but started off strongly with a win against York after a goal from Amelia. Next up the girls played Ben Rhydding and the goals were flowing with both Rosie and Amelia scoring and Edie scoring a hattrick! The final team the girls faced was Doncaster and the team continued to dominate. Beth and Lorna in defence kept the opposition from being a threat. Rosie worked hard in midfield to push the team forward and delivered some great balls to Lauren, Edie and Amelia in attack. The team were rewarded with goals from Edie and Rosie.
As there were only four teams in the division, the teams were to play everyone again. The team faced York first and despite having the possession, York were able to break through and score against the run of play. The girls fought back but were unable to equalise. The team reconsidered their positions for the next game against Ben Rhydding with Beth moving back into attack and Amelia to defence. The team suffered a set back when Rosie was injured so played with only six players. The team were unlucky to not win but maintained a draw. The final game against Doncaster was another good game, Rosie was able to come back and dominated midfield following her injury for most of the game. Amelia and Lorna in defence stopped any attacks and distributed the ball to the forwards. Beth was unlucky not to score after a great shot on goal and Lauren and Edie worked hard to get into some great positions. Edie and Rosie both scored and sealed the teams final win. We had a last minute sub arrive; Katie came on for the last few minutes and did not look out of place! As ever throughout the tournament, when needed Amie (GK) stepped in to save any shots on goal and kept five clean sheets in the six games.
The final results meant that the team finished top of Division 1! Thanks to the super results service of Lesley and Lisa! And top coach Milsy!
U12 Girls B Team Report
Slazenger B (6) vs. (0) Wakefield 4s [Scorers: Eleanor (2), Darcie (3), Harriette (1)]
Great opening match to the tournament for the B team today as the game was predominately played in Slazenger’s half. There was a quick opening goal from Darcie in minute 4, followed quickly by a great run and goal by Eleanor taking the score to 2-0. The defence held strong with Katie and Tilda keeping the ball in Slaz’s attacking half and out of the our defensive D. Ruth and Harriette worked well in midfield to keep pushing the ball back into our D supporting the high score line! Supported by Ruth, Tilda and Katie – the forwards were on fire with Eleanor scoring again, followed by Harriette and another two from Darcie. Final score was 6-0!
Slazenger B (4) vs. (0) Slazenger C [Scorers: Darcie (1), Eleanor (2), Harriette (1)]
A great match between our 2 teams, as we only had one GK between us the C team started without and Darcie scored early in the game, followed by a great run down the wing by Eleanor taking the score to 2-0. Eleanor quickly followed with another goal taking the score to 3-0. Phoebe and Emmy worked tirelessly in defence in the absence of a GK. Lillianna then swapped to GK for the C team and saved a short corner, which Harriette hit back and scored taking the game to 4-0. The C team continued to work hard, Matthew worked tirelessly in attack, Katie and Tilda staying solid to keep him out in the absence of a GK concluding the game at 4-0 to Slaz 2.
Slazenger B (5) vs. (0) Huddersfield [Scorers: Eleanor (1), Darcie (3), Harriette (1)]
In the last game of the tournament and the team held strong keeping play in their half. A short corner in the first couple of minutes was defended well and hit out by Hudds, which was stopped by our defence (Tilda and Katie) who then pushed it back into the D resulting in the first goal of the match from Eleanor. Ruth, Tilda and Katie kept pushing play back down to their end. They continued to work well together with the forward getting into space and making some fab runs down the wings. resulting in a further 3 goals from Darcie and the final goal from Harriette taking the final score to 5-0! The girls played fantastically well with Lillianna struggling to get much action with Slaz 2. All players shone bright but player went Darcie as she worked so hard, meeting the ball and getting back when the other team were attacking, alongside all the fantastic goals! 👏
U12 Girls C Team Report
Slazenger C (4) vs. (0) Huddersfield [Scorers: Jess (2), Matthew (2)]
The team has a great start to the 1st tournament of the season. This was a new formed team, with this being the first u12 tournament for many. Lillianna doubled as keeper, making some great saves and keeping a clean sheet. Phoebie and Emmy stayed strong in defence, with Emmy who is new to hockey and only joining the club over the summer, working hard, looking strong and supporting the ball up the field. Matthew, who stepped in last minute to make a full team, worked hard moving the ball up the middle and out to the wings (Lily and Izzy). Jess found some was great spaces up front and they all battled well keeping possession of the ball throughout the game. Their hard work and determination paid off with 2 goals scored by Matthew and 2 by Jess, the second goal being set up beautifully by Lily – leaving final score at 4-0 to Slaz 3.
Slazenger B (4) vs. (0) Slazenger C
This was exciting match between Slaz B and Slaz C, with Slaz C not letting the B team win without a fight. Phoebie and Emmy played had, making some strong tackle, with Izzy and Matthew continuing to get back to support whilst they had no keeper. After going three goals down Lillianna, swapped to support the team and made some crucial saves against her team and supported the team to clear the D and feed the ball out wide. This was a tough match for the C team but a great result given they had no keeper for the first half.
Slazenger C (2) vs. (0) Wakefield 2 [Scorers: Matthew (2)]
The final match was against Wakefield 2 which saw a fantastic 2-0 win for Slaz C team. The team were starting to gel more and grow in confidence with some great team work to keep possession of the ball. There were some further great saves from Lillianna and confident defending from Phoebie W and Emmy, the rest of the team looked strong together covering the pitch and creating space for some great passes and attacks resulting in two goals from Matthew.
These were a set of smashing results for the Slaz C team, the full team should be very proud of themselves to come out and play like that at their first tournament and as a new team. The Player of the tournament, went to Emmy who created some great chances for the team with strong passes and blocked the opposition many times, she showed some truly fabulous play for someone so new to hockey! Well done 👏
Thank you all the parents and helpers for your support. Special mentions to Ruby and Bella Kidd for umpiring. Also to Roberta for keeping us to time, Rebecca for match reports for Slaz B and keeping scores and Cath for helping Slaz C to be ready to go on, match report and score recording.
And finally thanks to Gemma for coaching both B and C team at Slaz! #topcoach
U12 Boys
The U12 boys started their season today, having their first tournament at home.
Slazenger (7) vs. (0) Wakefield 2 [Scorers: Will (4), Owen (3)]
The boys were really up for the tournament and felt really confident going into the first game against Wakefield 2s. From the first whistle to the last, the boys played exceptionally well, not giving the Wakefield team a sniff. With Wakefield not having much attacking play due to our domination, Ethan, Ollie, and Nikolai had very little to do, with Nikolai basically a spectator throughout. Moving forward we were menacing, with Will, Owen, Charlie and Louis causing problem after problem. Dominic and Nate came on as subs and made immediate impacts in defence and midfield respectively. We moved the ball around well and were clinical in front of goal, with goals from Will and Owen. A great start to the tournament.
Slazenger (6) vs. (0) Barnsley [Scorers: Will (1), Owen (4), Charlie (1)]
In the second game we were up against a Barnsley side that we did not know much about, but we were outing confidence and wanted to carry this into our performance. We started very strongly again and dominated the game. Great movement up front from Will, Charlie and Owen, meant we caused the Barnsley defence problem after problem. Nate, Louis played in midfield and again showed that they are both going to have a big impact on the team this year. Yet again, Ethan, Dominic and Nikolai didn’t have much to do, but all kept focus and were solid when needed. Yet again we were ruthless in front of goal.
Slazenger (0) vs. (0) Adel
The third game against Leeds Adel was always going to be our toughest, and this proved to be the case. The game was end to end and we had to stay strong and focused throughout. The defensive players of Ethan, Dominic and Ollie were certainly tested in the game and even Nikolai had a small number of saves to make. We were awesome in attack again, with Charlie skinning the Adel defence at nearly every attempt, crossing the ball for us to have a number of shots, and had it not been for the Adel keeper and some good luck on their part, we could have been 3-0 up. Great work again from Nate and Louis down the left and a ‘captain’ like performance from Will, led to a number of shooting chances from Owen, Charlie, Will and Nate, all of which we failed to convert. This game really tested our character and I believe we came through it really well. We showed our strength and determination throughout the team, not just the starting 7, but all who came on as sub too.
Slazenger (6) vs. (0) Bradford [Scorers: Will (1), Owen (1), Charlie (1)]
The last game was against Bradford, which we needed to win to ensure top spot in the league. The boys, although tired after giving their all in the first three games, started strong from the started with an early goal from Will calming the nerves. Bradford started to come into to the game even more, although defensively we were great again, with Ethan giving his all, working hard, making great tackles, and some great forward play. Nate started on the left of midfield this game and did some great runs down the wing, crossing well to create a number of chances, one of which led to a Bradford defensive error, leaving Charlie to finish with a great shot from the edge of the D. Bradford again found some extra energy from somewhere leading to some great defending again by Ethan, Ollie and Dominic. Louis again came on to replace Nate and did well again, and to say that both Nate and Louis were playing their first tournament for Slaz, did not look out of place in this team.
More pressure from us with Charlie yet again been a constant threat down the right wing, found Owen with a great ball and he smashed it home. Another hard working win.
A great first tournament of the season, for what is a new U12 boys team this year. We played 4 games, winning 3 and drawing 1, meaning we finished top of the table without conceding a goal. I am super proud of all the boys today, with a big shout to Nate, Louis and Ollie for playing their first tournament for Slazenger. Player of the tournament was a tough one, with so many players giving their all, and a number of players scoring lots of goals, but Ethan just pipped them to the award, for his constant hard work, great tackles and being in the right place when it mattered. Well done Ethan! I look forward to the next tournament and a successful season for us all.
