U10 Girls
The U10 teams were out playing in the last tournament of the season today, the last one for some of the girls who will move up to u12s next season. The A team were playing in Leeds in the league play offs whilst the B & C team were in Doncaster.
The C team enjoyed their games and managed one win and two draws. The defence of Katie and Matthew worked hard with Savannah (GK) who made some great saves including one spectacular save! Katie made some excellent clearances and Matthew demonstrated his aerial skills! Isabella dominated in midfield and scored herself two goals. Martha, Tilly, Cerys and Darcie all showed off some great skills. Special mention to Cerys for her increased confidence on the ball but the player of the tournament went to Darcie for her brilliant skills, hard work rate and goals!! Thanks to Aidy for umpiring!
The B team won three games, drew two and lost only one. Lillianna made some spectacular saves as always supported by Pheobie and Matilda in defence. Pheobe and Harriette worked hard in midfield, distributing the ball and pushing forward. Heidi, Jess, Lydia all battled hard working for the team showing off their skills. There was some brilliant hockey from the girls and they are excited to face their parents in the kids v parents!! Player of the tournament went to Heidi. Thank you James and Issac for managing the team! Special thanks to Rich for being central timer and score keeper for the whole league!
The A team were all raring to go and wanting to end the season on a high after their recent cup win. In the group stages, they won their three games (1-0, 4-0 and 3-0) so qualified as group winners. The semi final was against Thirsk and the girls dominated throughout, they continually battled and scored in the last minute to secure their place in the final. The final was against Lindum who they had beaten 1-0 in the group stages. The girls demonstrated why they were cup champions and applied the pressure from the start. Amie (GK) and Lorna were rarely called into action but were focused throughout. Amelia and Rosie pushed the team forward distributing the ball up the pitch. Sophie worked hard on the wing and scored some great goals. Lauren on the other wing also fought hard for every ball. Beth was key in the press and applied the pressure whilst Edie was ready to score! The team were finally rewarded with a goal and won the final 🥇🏆
They were awarded with the play offs trophy and a trophy for the best team for the overall results from the season. These girls have been undefeated all season! What a way to end the season!! They have got to be the Slaz Team of the Year!! 💚🏑
U10 Boys
Today was the last tournament for the U10 Boys, and yet again the sun was shining at Slaz, for what was a great day of hockey. For the first time we fielded two teams, which goes to show the strength in depth we now have in the U10 squad.
The A team yet again came away from the day unbeaten, with 3 draws and a win. This means they have only condeeded 1 goal in their last 9 games, which is a fantastic achievement.
Yet again, Nikolai was between the sticks and although he was hardly called into action, when he was, he made some excellent saves, earning him the A team player of the tournament. It was great to see his celebrations after making a number of match saving saves. I think we will call him ‘snake hips’ from now on.
Yet again the defensive partnership of Alfie and Charlie Leonard, kept things extremely tight at the back, meaning the opposition players hardly had any joy in our defensive third. Alfie even popped up with a goal today and was very unlucky not to get a second too.
The usual midfield was reunited with George back in at left midfield and he was his usual busy self, putting in some great tackles and showing some impressive dribbling. Charlie Hammond yet again caused the opposition defences lots of problems with his pacey runs into the box, and was unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. Completing the midfield yet again was Noah who continued with yet another consistent performance, driving down the wing, whilst also taking up great positions in the D, where he eventually got the goal he deserved.
Owen again led the line up front and worked tirelesey throughout the day, linking up well with the midfield and battling to win the ball back. Owen was unlucky today in not getting the goal his performances deserved.
The B team played together for the first time ever, and although the results did not go their way, with 3 loses and a draw, the effort, skill and desire shown was a pleasure to see.
In defence, the partnership of Charley Thomas and Ethan worked hard to keep the opposition attackers at bay, with both making some important tackles. Ethan had his best tournament yet, making some impressive last ditch tackles, whilst also showing grit and determination to win the ball, rightly earning him the B team player of the tournament.
The midfield was made up of Dominic, who never stopped running, showing some great dribbling up and down the wing. Jack Lockwood playing his first game for the U10s showed that he thoroughly deserved his place in the team, with impressive tackling throughout. Alistair completed the midfield and did not look out of place on the right wing. Everytime he was in possession, his first thought was to attack and he did this constantly thought the day.
Up front today was Harry Lockwood and he was a constant threat, dropping deep to recieve the ball whilst showing his excellent stick skills.
What a superb season these boys have had. Bearing in mind that some had never held a hockey stick before this season started, they have all worked super hard and certainly shown that next season will be a season where they can achieve great things.
Will and myself are super proud of you all. It has been a pleasure for us to work with you each week and see you develop into the players you are today. You are a group of super young men
Thank you to Keith Leonard for umpiring and Jonny Wiper for time keeping
