2013-03-09 – Slazenger HC Match Reports

March 9, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Mens 1st’s (6) vs. (1) City of York 2nd’s
Slaz 1st vs city of York 2nd. Slaz are mid table thanks to a great run in the second half of the season. And they faced top of the league side who have only lost one side this season.

York pressed high and rotated their their forwards creating havoc for ten minutes. But good defending and keeping kept slaz in the game, and York had pressed high, slaz caught them on the break and the forward treo tore into the D and slotted on past the keeper.

York came back hard and the game was still tight but again slaz got the second through the speed of the right winger Dan Perry. Slaz scored the third into their own net. But went straight up the pitch to make it 3-1.

In the second half slaz slotted another 3 in to make it 6-1 scores were jack mumford, Mark Swinden, Jez whawell and jack kitchen got 2. A great team performance approaching the end of the season.

Mens 2nd’s (2) vs. (1) Worksop 2nds
The mens 2nds travelled away to Worksop, looking for another win to keep the push on for promotion. While they came away with the, the game was far from what was expected.

Slaz struggled to get into their usual fluid style, but managed to net two in the first half. The second half, Worksop began to build pressure and scored their first. It looked as though it would be a tough battle to hold onto the 3 points.

Controversy mired the end of the game however, when a Worksop player struck centre back Paul Johnson across the head with his stick, requiring hospital and 2 stitches in his forehead. This led to the game being cancelled with 15 minutes remaining. However with over 50 minutes being played, the result stands.

Mens 4th’s (4) vs. (2) Leeds 7th’s
Slaz went to Leeds with a very young team and got off to a good start with a early goal even thou they were not playing as well as they have done this season.

The second half got off to a bad start, with Slaz conceeding two quick goals in.

That seemed to kick start Slaz who started play some good hockey and the goals came. The team went on to win 4.2.goals from James Lavy, Peter Gunning, Rob Cann and a own goal.

Man of the match went to Steve Fealy.

Ladies 2nds (1) vs. (0) Netherwood Bradford 1st’s
The ladies seconds continued their impressive wining streak, taking all 3 points for the third successive week. It wasn’t quite the same goal-fest as last weeks 6-2 win, but never the less it was another 3 points.

From the start the home side made a strong start, applying lots of pressure on the Netherwood defence. Many chances were created, requiring some impressive goal keeping. Slaz won several short corners and a few shots went close to breaking the deadlock from Nez, with only some desperate defending keeping the ball out.

Eventually the deadlock was broken by the usually non-scoring striker Elle Poskett, sweeping the ball into the goal after some fantastic build up play from Stacey Binns and Natasha Wiper. Several minutes later, Elle Poskett was back for more with her new found scoring ability, putting the ball in the back of the net again. Unfortunately there was heartbreak for Slaz with the refs whistle blowing for a foul in the build up and the goal didn’t stand.

The second half stated much like the first, Slaz applying all the pressure and Netherwood having to defend in depth. However the opposition did make a few threatening breaks, but with Julie Finch her usual solid self at the back there was no way through. Slaz created many more chances, including a lifted shot from Daisy Gee Sanders requiring and excellent save from the full-stretched keeper.

The home team resorted to desperate measures for a second goal, bringing up solid defender Julie Finch for 3 short corners who narrowly missed the goal. Stacey Binns was wary of the time and had a couple of superb shots at goal to try and settle the game. She repeated these shots many times after the defence continually cleared the ball to her, but it wasn’t to be her day.

In the end Slaz held out and claimed a well deserved 1-0 win thanks to an all-round excellent team performance.
