Report: 05-12-2015 – Mens 4th’s (1) vs. (3) Worksop 2nd’s

December 5, 2015 by Slazenger HC

After a slow start Slaz 4 found themselves trailing 3-0 after 20 minutes. Not to despair new comers to the team Dene Minichalla and Josh Swallow dropped into mid field to help plug the gaps, the tide was turning on the run in to half time.

Debutant stand in Captain Steve Johnson rallied the team in the break, and Slaz 4s set about the second half with a steely determination. Tony Walker made several crucial saves of the line which allowed some powerful clearance balls to be made out of defence by Scouse.

Geoff Birkett and Harry Gunning gained control in the middle of the field and delivered good ball to the forwards. Slaz were now in the game, and after several good breaks down the right wing by Chris Gascgoine got their just reward when steve Johnson’s shot was deflected by the keeper and put in off the line by Josh Swallow.

Final score 3-1.

Report: 19-09-2015 – Mens 4th’s (2) vs. (0) Worksop 2nd’s

September 19, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 4s started off their campaign with a deserved victory vs Worksop 2s on a sunny afternoon at home. They started off well with an end to end first half which could have resulted in either team going 3 up at the break.

Then as the 2nd half started Slaz struck from the start with a deflected Harry Gunning shot found its way into the Worksop goal via Darren Butterys stick. Slaz were on the up with another great goal from James walker with a strike from the top of the circle. The match was then closed out with some great defending from Ben Stevenson and Tony Walker at the back. Notable performances go to débutantes Chris Gascgoine and Josh Dunstan who showed bags of potential with a solid partnership on the right hand side.

Man of the match goes to Goalkeeper Giles Field who provided a number of match winning saves to earn a valuable clean sheet including a penalty flick.

November 8, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Report: 15-12-2012 – Mens 5th’s (3) vs. (4) Worksop 3rd’s

December 19, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 5’s faced a tough encounter against a physical and quick Worksop team.

Despite this it was Slazengers that started the brighter with neat passing interplay and people making themselves available for passes. Harry Gunning and Tom Pitchforth worked well linking up with veteran Geoff Birkett in midfield and wingers Chris Gascoigne and Elliott Golding were always available on the wings.

It was no surprise when striker Peter Gunning put the home side in front half way through the first half after a typically slick move.

But it was very disappointing when the away team managed to equalise soon after. This was the result of poor marking and the away team having good pace in the centre of the park.

Slazengers persevered and were soon creating other scoring chances which unfortunately were not converted.

It was slightly unfortunate that the away team scored again before the half time whistle and a little against the run of play. Half time score 2-1 to the opposition.

Second half Slazengers had to dig deep as the physically stronger and older Worksop players began to test the home team. But for some stout defending from Danny Croxall and Neil Stacey the home team would have been in trouble.

It was Slazengers turn to score against the run of play when the home team swiftly counter attacked for Peter Gunning to net his second of the game. But the problem still remained that Slazengers were a tiring side and despite Harry Buttery successfully defending a penalty flick he couldn’t stop Worksop scoring 2 quick goals.

To their credit Slazengers dug deep and with 10 minutes remaining they rallied and began to pressure the away team. Elliott Golding scored with 5 minutes remaining and it was Worksop’s turn to dig deep as Slazengers mounted wave after wave of attacks.

It was slightly unfortunate that right at the death Slazengers just failed to grab an equaliser when the ball flashed across the goalmouth for 3 Slazenger players to miss the goal scoring opportunity.

Final score 4-3 to Worksop.

Report: 01-12-2012 – Mens 2nd’s (5) vs. (1) Worksop 2nd’s

December 5, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slaz men’s 2nds continued their great run of form with a win over the Worksop 2nds, new to the Yorkshire league. However it was Worksop who started the quickest with some quick passing play which put slaz under pressure for first 10 minutes. The home team began to put together a series of passes through the midfield allowing the wingers to set up John Sykes and Jake Barras with a series of shots on goal.

It was not all one way traffic. Worksop attacked at pace when the opportunity arose. It was Slaz who got the first goal a quick routine setting up John Sykes to slot the ball in. However Worksop countered immediately levelling in the following minute.

After this Slaz settled into a rhythm, with Jake barras scoring the second with a reverse shot from an almost impossible angle.

Worksop were unable to equalise further, and slaz piled on the pressure. Two short corner strikes were rifled in by Paul Johnson, and Barras netted a fifth to complete the win.

Report: 10-11-2012 – Mens 5th’s (0) vs. (1) Worksop 3rd’s

November 19, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger men’s 5th team had the better of the opposition for the first half of this encounter against Worksop.

Time and again Slazenger’s played some attractive, passing hockey, making excellent use of the wings with Ben Jackson linking up well with George Fealy and Alex King making good inroads down the left flank assisted by Elloit Goulding.

However, despite all this possession Slazenger could not capitalise and find the back of the net. Forward Peter Gunning was one of many, who had several chances to score but the Worksop keeper time and again came of his line to snuff out any danger.

At half time, the team discussed what needed to be done to find the back of the net but the opposition had other ideas and as some of the Slazenger players began to tire Worksop exerted more and more influence on the game. They were a physically bigger and stronger team and a couple of the skillful midfield players began to dominate the middle of the park and make Slazenger’s have to work much harder to retain quality possession.

Slazenger’s ultimately paid the price for not scoring when on top by switching off at a free hit and everyone watched the opposition simply pass the ball into the net unopposed. The home team didn’t deserve to lose but the game remained 1-0 to Worksop.
