Report: 28-02-2015 – Mens 2nd’s (9) vs. (1) Leeds 6th’s

February 28, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers men’s 2’s visited Leeds men’s 6’s on Saturday and came away with a resounding 9-1 win.

The tone of the match was set when straight from the push back, Slazengers moved the ball well and at pace resulting in Ted Richardson scoring inside 30 seconds.

Slazengers dominated for long periods of the game and it was only the occasional lapse in concentration that saw Leeds threaten. Goals were scored by Richardson (2), Dan Atkinson (2) and then one each for Byron Dean, Ste Roberts, Brett Cunningham, Ben Graham and Simon Randall.

Dan Atkinson took the man of match award and a special mention to Tom Murray in the Slazengers goal who pulled off one of the saves of the season.

Report: 15-11-2014 – Mens 2nd’s (3) vs. (0) Leeds 6th’s

November 15, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers Mens 2nd team finally got the win their recent performances deserved with a 3-0 victory against Leeds mens 6’s. Slazengers started the game at a fast pace and the Leeds midfield were immediately put under pressure and forced into mistakes. Slazengers forced a short corner and following Matt Greens shot being illegally stopped on the line, a penalty flick was awarded.

Simon Chamberlain made no mistake to put Slazengers 1-0 up. Leeds responded immediately and Slazengers keeper James Cowden was forced into a couple of sharp saves to maintain his clean sheet. Slanzengers continued to keep their workrate high with Matt Banks, Ste Roberts and Ben Graham working tirelessly in midfield to keep Leeds under pressure.

The 2nd half started saw the Leeds team begin to lose their discipline which resulted in 3 yellow cards. Slazengers created a number of chances and following the Leeds keeper making another save, Dan Atkinson was on hand to knock the loose ball into an open goal. Atkinson got a fortunate 2nd late on when he was lucky not to be blown up for a foul although 3-0 was a fair scoreline.

The match ended on a sour note when a Leeds player suffered a bad injury and we wish him all the best for a speedy recovery.

The forward line of Atkinson, Jake Barras and Jack Mumford were excellent all game for Slazengers although it was Ste Roberts who took the man of the match award for a tireless display in midfield.

Report: 25-10-2014 – Ladies 3rd’s (2) vs. (4) Leeds 3rd’s

October 25, 2014 by Slazenger HC

The Yvonne Horner Shield cup game meant a Sunday push back at home against leeds 3’s for Slazengers 3s in a game that saw end to end action throughout.

Despite leeds flying high in the league above slazenger 3s, the difference was hardly noticeable and good defending by both teams resulted in a goalless first half. The second half began with as much of the same determination and quick play as the first. The breakthrough eventually came for Slazengers with a quick ball coming in from the left across the penalty spot to meet with the reverse stick of Hannah Chilton who hit the back board for the second time this season.

Leeds managed to pull one back but Slazengers took the lead again with a well executed short corner by Heather Bates. The game looked like it was going to be Slazengers for the taking but 3 minutes from time leeds pulled even again, levelling the score at 2-2.

The final whistle went and a penalty shoot out determined the final result with Leeds taking the game by 4 flicks to 2.

Report: 12-10-2014 – Boys U10’s October Tournament

October 12, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Boys U10's - Alex Stacey, Fraser Cass, Aiden Coughtrey, Charlie Bland, Luke Minchella, Tommy Randle, Matthew Royston, Will Gascoigne.

Boys U10’s – Alex Stacey, Fraser Cass, Aiden Coughtrey, Charlie Bland, Luke Minchella, Tommy Randle, Matthew Royston, Will Gascoigne.

Slazengers’ under-ten boys A team made a great start to the season by finishing the opening Yorkshire Youth Hockey League tournament with an unbeaten record. Half the squad were playing in Division D last season, so the step up to Division A was a big one – but they took it in their stride to win three and draw two of their matches at the Weetwood venue in Leeds.

A goal by Alex Stacey was enough to seal a 1-0 victory against Leeds in the first game, before Will Gascoigne’s strike earned a similar outcome against Harrogate. Keeper Aidan Coughtrey was untroubled in both these matches as Slazengers dominated and although a strong Ben Rhydding side then gave them a little more trouble, a 0-0 draw was a fair reflection of the play.

Slazengers’ best result came next as they beat York 3-0, with Luke Minchella adding to a double by speedy winger Stacey. And although Sheffield took a 2-0 lead in the final game as Slazengers gave every player equal time on the pitch, Stacey and Gascoigne returned to pull their side level.

A special mention must go to new recruit Matthew Royston, after he only picked up a hockey stick for the first time three weeks earlier, as the points earned by Slazengers proved plenty to keep them in the top division for the next tournament.

The remaining members of the successful squad were Tommy Randle, Fraser Cass and Charlie Bland.

Report: 11-10-2014 – Ladies 2nd’s (5) vs. (2) Leeds 4th’s

October 11, 2014 by Slazenger HC

With some major changes to the team this week Slazengers battled hard, held their shape and played as a team. Unfortunately Leeds scored 2 goals from short corners in the first half. Slazengers pulled back 2 goals from Naomi Horsley early in the second half but Leeds scored another 2 goals from short corners in the second half and were awarded a dodgy open play goal.

Sadly even though Slazengers attacked well Leeds goalkeeper won their game for them and the final score was 5-2 to Leeds. A brilliant overall team performance with plenty to work on but loads to build on. Man oh the match went to Jess Lloyd.

Report: 09-02-2014 – Boys U12’s Tournament

February 9, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger u12 boys had mixed results this weekend.

There first game on Sunday saw Slazenger’s dominate the first half but then 2 quick goals from Halifax put them on the back foot. The team showed great determination to come back and draw level with goals from Owen Bland and Joshua Swallow.

The second game against Leeds B team was a closely fought game, but Slazengers came out on top winning 1-0 through another goal from Swallow.
The next game didn’t go as planned as they lost to Thirsk the winners of the league in the last minute.

Kingston upon Hull was the next game and Slazenger lost 2-0 when some of the decisions didn’t go their way their heads went down allowed the opposition to attack  on the break.

On a positive note they finished the day on a better note as they drew 1-1 with Airedale after a great solo run and goal from Bland.

Report: 18-01-2014 – Mens 2nd’s (3) vs. (2) Leeds 5th’s

January 18, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2nd team travelled to Leeds on Saturday looking to make it 2 wins in 2 since the Christmas break and did exactly that with a well deserved 3-2 victory. Slazengers were without 2 of their regular defenders and when their only recongnised centre back was injured mid way through the 1st half, things could have turned out differently. It was up to Matt Green and Rowan Tejura to step into the role which they did to constantly thwart Leeds attacks.

Slazengers took the lead when a quick break resulted in man of the match Simon Randall getting a touch past the Leeds keeper only for Leeds to hit back immediately. Leeds had the better of the first half but Slazengers defence and keeper Ralph Toon stood firm to keep the score 1-1 at the break.

A re-shuffle in the Slazengers midfield helped turn things round and Slazengers were on top for the majority of the second half. Their work rate in midfield especially from Ste Roberts didn’t allow Leeds any time on the ball and started to force mistakes. Slazengers took the lead when Jake Barras converted a short corner only for Leeds once again to equalize. Slazengers weren’t to be denied however and when a mistake was forced from the Leeds defence, the ball was squared to Matt Stacey who drilled home the winner from the top of the ‘D’.

Slazengers entertain Lincoln Roses on Saturday and will be looking for a big performance after suffering a heavy defeat in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

Report: 04-01-2014 – Mens 3rd’s (3) vs. (2) Leeds 6th’s

January 4, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger 3’s returned to action in Yorkshire division 5 south, after their Christmas break, with a competitive 3-2 victory over strong opposition in Leeds 6’s.

The first half was very even with both sides having chances to score. But for some resolute defending, the game had remained scoreless well into the first half. The opposition drew first blood when under pressure defender Alex Calderley turned a well drilled shot accidentally into his own net.

Slazengers remained upbeat and it wasn’t long before striker Luke Gueli received the ball on the edge of the goalmouth, smartly turned his marker and deftly beat the advancing keeper with a delicate reverse flick.

The scores remained level at the halftime interval.

Second half Slazengers began to exert more pressure than previously and were gaining the upper hand in the match. So it was slightly annoying when the Horbury team conceded again to go 2-1 behind.

This just galvanised the team and it was fitting that man of the match James Walker scored the equaliser after some smart work and quality passing around the opposition half. Slazengers didn’t settle for the draw and just before the finish it was James Walker again who had the satisfaction of smashing the ball high into the empty goal from close range after another incisive attack.

Final score 3-2.
