Report: 21-11-2015 – Ladies 2nd’s (1) vs. (5) Huddersfield 2nd’s

November 21, 2015 by Slazenger HC

With both teams at the top side of the league it was going to be a tough game. Both teams went out hard and at half time there was no score despite Slazengers having chances.

After half time Slazengers managed to break through and a goal from Naomi Frith started things going. Unfortunately Slazengers were unable to hold the lead and Huddersfield went on to score 5 goals. Final score 5-1 to Huddersfield but this did not reflect the effort and standard of play from Slazengers.

Man of the match went jointly to Sarah Hobbs and Naomi Frith.

Report: 28-03-2015 – Mens 2nd’s (5) vs. (0) Huddersfield 3rd’s

March 28, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers mens 2nd team faced Huddersfield mens 3’s in their penultimate game of the season and ran out comfortable 5-0 winners. Slazengers were quick off the mark and put Huddersfield under early pressure but failed to find the net until midway through the half when Brett Cunningham finished off a good cross from winger Ian Hedges. Despite dominating possession, Slazengers failed to increase their lead before half time going in 1-0 up at the break.

A stern halftime talk kicked started Slazengers and with increased intensity, the lead was soon increased when Ted Richardson finished off a short corner routine. Hedges got on the score sheet following excellent work down the right from James Walker and 2 more from Cunningham saw him complete his hat-trick. The man of the match award went to Slazengers keeper James Cowden despite him only touching the ball once during the game.

Slazengers final game is away at Sheffield Hallam in 2 weeks time where they will look to end on a high against opposition who have always got the better of them in recent meetings.

Report: 24-01-2015 – Ladies 2nd’s (2) vs. (2) Huddersfield Dragons 2nd’s

January 24, 2015 by Slazenger HC

After having a week off Slazengers were ready for a battle. The game was a fairly even match but it was the Dragons who scored first. Slazengers battled on and equalised before half time from an open play goal from Claire Dunstan.

Dragons had a number of short corners but failed to score but they then sneaked another goal from open play. Slazengers then scored the equaliser from a short corner goal from Stacey Drake. The score line finished 2 all. Player of the match went to Lizzie Tunstall.

Report: 27-09-2014 – Ladies 4th’s (0) vs. (3) Huddersfield Dragons 3rd’s

September 27, 2014 by Slazenger HC

After a succesful ‘Back to Hockey’ campaign over the summer Slazenger’s 4th ladies team travelled to Huddersfield with 5 of their new players.

It was a great team effort the first half and Slazenger were unlucky to conceed a goal. In the second half both Claudia Barber and Megan Bird played some excellent hockey but fatigue set in and the young Dragons team were able to score twice more.

Emma Elsey played an amazing first game in a Slazenger shirt and got the well deserved Player of the Match vote.

Report: 20-09-2014 – Ladies 1st’s (1) vs. (3) Huddersfield Dragons 1st’s

September 20, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Opened up game play extremely strong providing Huddersfield Dragons a difficult challenge. Shots on goal were unfortunately saved – with some hitting the post causing frustration.

Pressing forward Dragons were able to score twice before Slazengers eventually connected with the back board after a fantastic strike at a difficult angle from Helen Hough.

Dragons went on to score a 3rd, however, Slazengers held their own towards the end of the game.

Outstanding play from Sarah Hobbs and Lisa Minchella who undoubtedly gave everything they had. Slazengers look forward to their next challenge against Doncaster next week.

Report: 08-02-2014 – Ladies 1st’s (1) vs. (4) Huddersfield Dragons 1st’s

February 8, 2014 by Slazenger HC

It was very much a game of two halves in the local derby between Slazenger and rivals Huddersfield Dragons and it could also be said that the scoreline flattered the winners slightly. In the first half the game was quite even, however Huddersfield gained the upper hand due to converting 2 short corners in 6 minutes close to the end of the half (after also scoring two from open play within a 5 minute period). Slazenger did gain just as many short corner opportunities however they could just not convert and were clearly disappointed (as were the home crowd) with the first half scoreline of 4-0.

In the second half it was like a different game as Slaz picked up the pace and found their passion and determination. The strengths came from the back with Lisa Minchella having a fantastic half, resulting in her gaining Player of the match.

Despite Sarah Hobbs providing a lot of drive from the right, Slaz just couldn’t get the ball in the net, until a short corner was awarded half way through the second half. The ball came straight out to the top of the D where Vice Captain Sarah Hobbs smashed the ball straight into the back of the net, a well deserved goal for the home side. Slazenger had a wealth of short corners and attacking play but despite some powerful driving runs from Captain and striker Helen Hough and valuable support from youngsters Hetty, Katie and Hannah, Slazenger were unable to convert any further goals.  Winning the second half 1-0 just wasn’t enough to beat the opposition who defended well, but a great second half team effort by the home side.

Thanks to Coach Steve Wood, all the home supporters and Team Manager Claire Mills for trying to keep us going – the team will not be looking forward to the laps that Dave Hellam will make them do for the defeat but they were warned!!  Next week Slaz travel to Halifax who are placed very near the top of the table.

Report: 25-01-2014 – Ladies 3rd’s (11) vs. (0) Huddersfield Dragons 3rd’s

January 25, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Two players scored hat-tricks as Slazengers Ladies 3rds overwhelmed bottom side Huddersfield Dragons 3rds 11-0 in Division Five of the Yorkshire League.Gemma Whittam and Claire Dunstan were the treble stars as mid-table Slazengers left their young and inexperienced hosts still searching for a first win of the season.

Huddersfield fell behind inside two minutes when Linda Stacey netted with a solo effort – and it was 4-0 by the interval as Justine Birkett capitalised on a cross from Dunstan, who added the fourth goal after strike partner Whittam had put the visitors three up.Whittam poached two more goals at the start of the second half to complete her hat-trick, with Stacey then doubling up from a fine strike to make it 7-0.

Donna Wood added her first goal of the season from a short corner, Stacey passed for Birkett to add her second and Dunstan completed the tally with the final two goals to join Whittam on three for the game.

The man of the match honour went to young midfielder Hannah Chilton, who has just been promoted from the fourth team, after her attacks down the right-hand side set up a series of chances.

Report: 20-10-2013 – Ladies 3rd’s (5) vs. (0) Huddersfield Dragons

October 20, 2013 by Slazenger HC

‘Lets slay some dragons………..’

To say this was the second game of the weekend for the Slazenger’s Ladies 3s, the team went out with determination and showed off some ‘dragon slaying’ skills to win. From the start Slaz gave 110% keeping the ball in their oppositions half, attacking from midfield, with some very close calls in the ‘D’ resulting in penalty corners awarded to Slaz which were defended strongly by the young Dragons. Finally, the first goal of the game came from centre forward Louise Nock from a well worked penalty corner, followed shortly after a second from ‘player of the match’ Claire Dunstan. Dragons gained a lucky break after a defended penalty corner which caught the Slaz defence off guard. An attacking dragon had flown high up the pitch without the defence realising which resulted in a one on one moment in the ‘D’ between dragon and slayer Lizzie Tunstall, who cleared the ball leaving the dragon stunned and decked. Minutes before half time saw Louise put another goal in the back of the net, bringing the half time score to 3-0 Slaz.

Both teams came back fighting in the second half. Huddersfield had a few breaks over the half way line, but the Slaz defence, which included young Hettie Walker on her debut, were tight and soon put the young dragons back in their place. Slazenger’s picked up the pace, using the ball to do the hard work, and soon saw another goal, from Louise Nock. This was followed by yet more short corner action, however Slaz were unable to convert. However a well-timed strike from Claire Dunstan from the 25 found Becky Townsend’s stick in just the right place on the right post giving Slaz a fourth. Huddersfield dragons continued to battle hard, but were tiring and couldn’t defend a ‘hat trick’ goal from Louise Nock. Final score 5-0 to Slaz.

Report: 19-10-2013 – Ladies 1st’s (0) vs. (1) Huddersfield Dragons 1st’s

October 19, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger had prepared well for the forthcoming trip to local rivals Huddersfield Dragons with the vast majority of squad members available, however had a significant setback the morning of the trip when Vice Captain Sarah Hobbs dropping out early doors due to food poisoning. Thanks go to our 3rd team Captain Sarah Ritchie for being so understanding about us having to take one of her best players and Louise Nock for ably stepping up to help out.
Captain Helen Hough got off to a brilliant start by squirting an energy gel all over one of the umpires during their pre match talk but managed somehow to win the toss (maybe something to do with the fact it was a half crown and the other captain didn’t know what it was). The game plan was always to give Huddersfield as little space as possible and Slaz knew they would have to fight hard to contain the midfield playmakers. This plan was carried out successfully. Undeniably the Slaz defence were very busy for most of the teim with goalkeeper and player of the match Eleanor Townend having a brilliant game, saving shot after shot to keep a clean sheet for the whole of the first half. Several shots were also saved off the line by the Slaz defence – at one point by defender Kelly Whittam’s mouth which resulted in a flick that the opposition missed. Slaz did have several short corners and the the chance to break away and score but were denied by the Huddersfield keeper.
Slazenger were pleased that they had managed to keep the scores level at the half time break but knew that it was going to be a difficult second half – especially since there were now lots of the away team supporters on the other side of the pitch. Again the whole of the Slazenger defence and midfield stepped up admirably to deny the opposition time after time as they attacked constantly, facing a number of consecutive short corners. Admirably Slaz managed to hold on until the last 10 minutes when they conceeded the only goal of the game. Unfortunately Slazenger were unable to equalise and the final score was a disappointing 0-1. However, not too disheartening as it was a great team performance and lots of positives to build on when Slaz play at Boston Spa in two weeks time due to a slip week.
