Report: 18-10-2015 – Boys U10’s Tournament

October 18, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger U10 boys opened their latest campaign with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Doncaster. A fine goal from Tyler O’Connor backed up with solid defensive work from Josh Proctor ensured honours even.

Slaz followed up with two 2-1 victories over Brigg and Airedale with O’Connor (2) and Tommy Randle (2) finding the net, with
Luke Minchella working tirelessly all afternoon up and down the right flank providing a number of dangerous crosses. Dom Sanderson in goal made sure of maximum points with some outstanding work.

At the back, Lewis Killey, Alex Hobson and Josh Proctor provided a solid base to build on all morning, however the boys came up against table toppers Harrogate and were unfortunate to go down 2-0.

The final game against Ben Rhydding saw Slazengers regain their form and spent the entire game camped in the opponents half however – mainly due to some outstanding saves made by the Ryhdding keeper, they could not break the deadlock.

Slazengers finished a credible third in the league and look forward to their next outing in the top division.

Yorkshire champions Slazenger Boys U10 hockey team got there new season underway with some hard fought games at Weetwood on Sunday.

The new look team with only Tommy Randle remaining from last seasons triumph opened with a 0-3 loss against Brigg. The game was tighter than the score line suggests with good forward pressure created by Alex Hobson.

Slazenger made a promising start in their next game verses Airedale. Fine inter play between Dominic Sanderson and Luke Minchella ended in a couple of shots narrowly missing the target. A breakaway from Airedale saw them open the scoring, which was followed by two  goals in quick succession despite great defensive work from Josh Proctor.

The boys did not let their heads drop however, and earned a fine 0-0 draw against Harrogate who had looked to be the team to beat up until then. Lewis Killey was a rock in defence and found Tyler O’Connor with a fine up field pass who went close with a shot.  There was great defending from both teams, with a fantastic last ditch tackle from Shawn Proctor keeping  Slazenger in the game. Minchella and Randle linked up well throughout the game ensuring pressure was kept up at the other end. A fantastic hard fought game of hockey finished with honours even.

Last season’s great rivals Ben Rydding were up last. Slazenger dominated the game and had started to gel nicely as a team. Slazenger looked solid in defence with Sanderson in goal, protected by Kiley and the Proctor brothers. Great wide play from Minchella and Hobson opened up the pitch allowing Randle to press forward and feed the ever busy O’Connor. Pressure grew until Randle found Minchella with a measured pass down the right wing who then broke into the D and unleashed a unstoppable shot into the far corner. The game ended in victory ensuring Slazengers’ rookies preserve their status in the top flight.

Report: 22-03-2015 – Boys U10’s Champions of Yorkshire

March 22, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Boys U10's

Slazengers were crowned Yorkshire Youth Hockey League under-ten boys champions after finishing unbeaten in the final competition of the season at Weetwood in Leeds.

The Slazengers team won four and drew one of their five Group A round-robin matches – and remarkably did so without conceding a single goal.

Keeper Aidan Coughtrey was well protected by Fraser Cass and Matthew Royston, who provided a defensive brick wall to keep out rivals from Huddersfield Dragons, Airedale, Leeds, York and Ben Rhydding.

Slazengers opened with a 3-0 win against Huddersfield courtesy of goals from James Sanderson, Tommy Randle and Charlie Bland, who was also on target in a 1-0 victory over Airedale.

Will Gascoigne was the scorer in another 1-0 win, this time against Leeds, before Gascoigne (2), Bland and Alex Stacey netted to see off York 4-0.
This gave Slazengers a healthy plus-nine goal difference – which was to prove significant as they drew their final match 0-0 against season-long foes Ben Rhydding, who were three goals worse off.

So Slazengers – coached by under-16s player Matthew Stacey, who also umpired throughout the series of tournaments – were able to celebrate lifting the trophy as county champions.

Meanwhile, the Slazengers B team have improved throughout the season and rounded off with a win, a draw and two defeats in their final competition.

Report: 07-03-2015 – Boys U10’s EHB Cup – Yorkshire Round

March 7, 2015 by Slazenger HC

2015-03-07 - BU10 - EHB Cup Round

Boys U10 Cup Squad: Tommy Randle, Luke Swallow, James Sanderson, Alex Stacey, Matthew Royston, Will Gascoigne, Frazer Cass, Aiden Coughtrey (GK)

Boys U10’s – England Hockey Cup
Slazengers under-tens are through to the North of England Finals of the England Hockey Cup after an impressive performance in the penultimate stage of the competition at Weetwood in Leeds. Ben Rhydding also progressed as one of the top two sides in the tournament and it was they who claimed the honours on the day after winning a tense penalty showdown to decide the top team.

Slazengers won all three of their round-robin matches in Pool A, scoring eight goals while conceding only one. They opened with their best result, a 4-0 win against York courtesy of goals by Tommy Randle (2), Luke Swallow and Will Gascoigne.

Next came a 1-0 victory over Wakefield, who frustrated Slazengers until Frazer Cass turned in a Gascoigne shot at a short corner with what proved to be the last hit of the game. It was much more straightforward in the last pool match as Randle, Alex Stacey and James Sanderson scored before opponents Sheffield claimed a last gasp-consolation.

The semi-final against Pool B runners-up Brigg did not start well for Slazengers as they conceded an early goal and it was not until the closing stages that they turned things around. Gascoigne followed up a block by the Brigg keeper to equalise and then claimed a last-hit winner with a long-range reverse-stick shot.

Ben Rhydding were Slazengers’ opponents in the final – as they have been in the majority of previous competitions this season – and an early short-corner goal left Slaz on the back foot. But they hit back to enjoy the better of the remainder of the match and it finished 1-1 thanks to Stacey as he dummied the Rhydding keeper to equalise.

The outcome was therefore decided on a penalty shot-out and, after Ben Rhydding missed the first of their three, Slazengers had a chance to win but had their final attempt well saved. Sudden death then saw Rhydding score twice more before their keeper saved again to seal the victory which will earn them a better seeding in the finals.

Report: 22-02-2015 – Boys U10’s Tournament

February 22, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers under-tens won the latest Yorkshire Youth Hockey League tournament at Weetwood in Leeds – and went goal crazy in the process.

Four games yielded 14 goals, with just three conceded, and produced three wins and a draw to leave the Slazengers lads top of Group A.

They opened with a 3-0 victory over Airedale, with Will Gascoigne, Frazer Cass and Charlie Bland on target.

Next came a superb 7-0 win against Bridlington, which featured James Sanderson’s first goal for Slazengers. Alex Stacey scored twice, as did Bland – including a penalty flick – and the tally was completed by Gascoigne, with a great flicked shot, and Tommy Randle.

Gascoigne added two more goals, backed up by one for Stacey, in a 3-2 win against Leeds, which left Slazengers in pole position going into their final match against old foes Ben Rhydding.

This finished 1-1, with Cass scoring the goal that confirmed the Slazengers youngsters – who also included Aidan Coughtrey and Matthew Royston – as champions.

Meanwhile, the Slazengers B team won one and lost three of their four games, with Luke Swallow and Jake Keighley scoring in the 2-0 victory over Wakefield B. The defeats were all by 2-0, to Bradford (twice) and in the second game against Wakefield B.

Completing the B team squad were Luke and Joe Minchella, Lewis Killey, Dominic Sanderson and Tyler O’Connor.

Report: 25-01-2015 – Boys U10’s

January 25, 2015 by Slazenger HC

2015-01-25-BU10A

Unlucky Slazengers missed out on top spot on goal difference in the latest Yorkshire Youth Hockey League under-ten boys seven-a-side tournament.
The youngsters beat old foes Ben Rhydding for the first time this season but finished behind them in the League A table after losing to Leeds, who also closed on the same number of points in third place.

A hat-trick by Alex Stacey enabled Slazengers to open with a 3-0 victory over Doncaster, before Tommy Randle and Will Gascoigne scored in a 2-0 win against Harrogate.

Gascoigne added a short-corner strike in the next match against Leeds, whose goal lived a charmed life as Slazengers went close on numerous other occasions but eventually lost 2-1 to their opponents’ only attacks.

This left Slazengers needing to overcome Ben Rhydding to have a chance of finishing top of the table and, after falling behind early, they hit back to win 2-1 as Charlie Bland and defender Frazer Cass, from another short corner, hit the target.

Unfortunately it was not quite enough as Ben Rhydding headed the top division with a goal difference of plus eight – just one better than Slazengers, with Leeds on plus two.

2015-01-25-BU10B

Meanwhile, Slazengers also put out a B team for the first time this season and they finished unbeaten in League D.

They opened with a 1-0 win against Harrogate thanks to a Jake Keighley goal and followed up with 0-0 draws against Bradford and Wakefield.

First-time keeper Dominic Sanderson showed great athleticism to deny all three opposition teams a goal, while Luke Minchella was particularly enthusiastic outfield.

Report: 30-11-2014 – Boys U10’s November Tournament

November 30, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers under-tens were beaten for the first time this season as they had to settle for a runners-up finish in the third of six Yorkshire Youth Hockey League tournaments. The Slazengers boys had finished top of Group A in the opening two rounds of matches at Weetwood in Leeds, while also winning the West Yorkshire Mini Hockey Championships cup competition.

Their latest outing saw them triumph in the opening four games before finally coming unstuck 1-0 against old foes Ben Rhydding, who had drawn with Slazengers in all their previous meetings this winter.Slazengers began with a 3-0 victory against Harrogate thanks to two goals from Charlie Bland, both with his reverse stick, and Will Gascoigne.

The same combination of scorers then earned a 3-1 success against Leeds.Another 3-0 win followed against York, with goals this time from Gascoigne – after a solo run out of defence – Alex Stacey and Tommy Randle, before Thirsk B were beaten 2-1 courtesy of strikes by Bland and Stacey.

This set up a winner-takes-all decider against Ben Rhydding, who just had the edge this time thanks to the only goal of the game as they reversed previous second-placed finishes against Slazengers.

Report: 16-11-2014 – Boys U10’s EHB Cup

November 16, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers under-tens maintained their unbeaten record for the season by winning the West Yorkshire Mini Hockey Championships at Weetwood in Leeds.

The Slazengers youngsters had triumphed in their two previous league competitions this season to be ranked top club side in the county for their age group.

And they followed up by winning two and drawing one of their matches in the Mini Hockey knockout tournament to seal one of the top two positions that earned a place in the Yorkshire finals.

Boys U10's - Alex Stacey

Boys U10’s – Alex Stacey

Slazengers laid a firm foundation for that success by winning their opening round-robin game 6-1 against Leeds – despite starting a man short due to congestion in Leeds caused by the Abbey Dash athletics event.

Alex Stacey scored the first two goals before Charlie Bland added the third with his first touch after finally beating the traffic and taking his place on the pitch. Stacey went on to complete his hat-trick and Bland made it a personal double, with Will Gascoigne wrapping up the tally.

Keeper Aidan Coughtrey was unlucky to be beaten by a deflection in that match but was rarely troubled again as he was well protected by his defence of Fraser Cass, James Sanderson, Matthew Royston and Tommy Randle.

Gascoigne and Stacey scored to earn a 2-0 win against Wakefield in the second match and Slazengers’ goal difference was such that they only needed a draw against Ben Rhydding in their last game to finish top of the table.

They duly played out a 0-0 stalemate to achieve that feat, with opponents Ben Rhydding joining them in the Yorkshire finals in March as the second-placed team.

Boys U10's - Will Gascoigne

Boys U10’s – Will Gascoigne

Slazengers boys retained their position as the best under-tens team in the county as they won the second tournament of the season in the top division of the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League, keeping an unbeaten record.

They won four of their matches at the Weetwood venue without conceding a goal and ensured they finished top of the A Division by earning a draw with Ben Rhydding in the last match of the day.

Goalkeeper Aidan Coughtrey had very little to do until playing his part to secure a point against closest rivals Ben Rhydding, while new player James Sanderson did well in a variety of positions. Matthew Royston and Fraser Cass completed the solid defence.

Slazengers opened in style with a 4-0 win against Doncaster courtesy of goals from Will Gascoigne (2), Charlie Bland and Tommy Randle, who was easily his side’s most improved player.

Gascoigne and Alex Stacey then netted in a 2-0 win against Leeds, before Gascoigne once more and Randle sealed another 2-0 win against York.
Bland (2) and Randle were the scorers as Wakefield were seen off 3-0, leaving Slazengers needing only to avoid defeat against Ben Rhydding to finish top of the section. This they did courtesy of Bland’s fourth goal of the day in a 1-1 draw.

Report: 12-10-2014 – Boys U10’s October Tournament

October 12, 2014 by Slazenger HC

Boys U10's - Alex Stacey, Fraser Cass, Aiden Coughtrey, Charlie Bland, Luke Minchella, Tommy Randle, Matthew Royston, Will Gascoigne.

Boys U10’s – Alex Stacey, Fraser Cass, Aiden Coughtrey, Charlie Bland, Luke Minchella, Tommy Randle, Matthew Royston, Will Gascoigne.

Slazengers’ under-ten boys A team made a great start to the season by finishing the opening Yorkshire Youth Hockey League tournament with an unbeaten record. Half the squad were playing in Division D last season, so the step up to Division A was a big one – but they took it in their stride to win three and draw two of their matches at the Weetwood venue in Leeds.

A goal by Alex Stacey was enough to seal a 1-0 victory against Leeds in the first game, before Will Gascoigne’s strike earned a similar outcome against Harrogate. Keeper Aidan Coughtrey was untroubled in both these matches as Slazengers dominated and although a strong Ben Rhydding side then gave them a little more trouble, a 0-0 draw was a fair reflection of the play.

Slazengers’ best result came next as they beat York 3-0, with Luke Minchella adding to a double by speedy winger Stacey. And although Sheffield took a 2-0 lead in the final game as Slazengers gave every player equal time on the pitch, Stacey and Gascoigne returned to pull their side level.

A special mention must go to new recruit Matthew Royston, after he only picked up a hockey stick for the first time three weeks earlier, as the points earned by Slazengers proved plenty to keep them in the top division for the next tournament.

The remaining members of the successful squad were Tommy Randle, Fraser Cass and Charlie Bland.
