Report: 05-12-2015 – Ladies 1st’s (1) vs. (4) Boston Spa 1st’s

December 5, 2015 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers Ladies 1’s started well from the first whistle this week. Despite playing the strong Boston Spa side, the Horbury team were undeterred. Within the first 5 minutes Slazengers were forcing the errors and for the majority of the first half, all the action was in the home sides attacking circle. Andrea Wallace, Frankie Tyrell and debut player Emily Chason linked up well throughout the game, creating many breaks for the team. In the first 35 minutes we were very unlucky to score, with Jessica Rudge and Ellie Page getting countless shots off, and Ailish Hendry and Tyrell both hitting the same post at a short corner. Half time started at 2-0 to Boston spa.

Slazengers lack of goals ended in the second half when an injection into the circle from Hendry was deflected by a diving Rudge. It was too late for the ladies 1’s though and the final score was 4-1. Boston Spa were a strong side but the ever improving Slaz team played a much better game against them than previously in the season. Man of the match went to Tyrell, and new to the team Chason had a storming match also. Minchella was strong as always at the back.

The team have improved no end from last season but there is still a long way to go!

Report: 10-10-2015 – Ladies 1st’s (0) vs. (4) Boston Spa 1st’s

October 10, 2015 by Slazenger HC

It was a slow start for Slazengers Ladies 1’s at Boston Spa this weekend. The opposition quickly gained a lead at the start of the match. Despite some great teamwork Slazengers finished 3-0 down at half time.

The ladies team played much better in the second half, it was a shame to finish at 4-0. Lisa Minchella gave a solid performance as always, with some great passing from Frankie Tyrrell.

Report: 02-11-2013 – Ladies 1st’s (0) vs. (5) Boston Spa 1st’s

November 2, 2013 by Slazenger HC

Sadly Slazenger Ladies 1st team were unable to curb a current run of defeats at Boston Spa this weekend.

Although the opposition appeared to start as the stronger team, Slaz defended well and eventually got into their stride mid way through the first half, playing some good hockey and unlucky not to score. It was unfortunate that a Boston Spa goal in the last few minutes saw Slaz 1-0 down at half time.

Further disappointment came for Slaz as Boston Spa managed to score again almost immediately after the start of the second half. Slaz often showed a lack of urgency and off the ball movement and were unable to contain this well structured team.

Boston Spa’s well practiced set pieces and fitness tested Slaz who conceded a further 4 goals (3 from deflections) with no reply despite having 11 short corners and numerous chances.

Despite what the scoreline suggested, this game was a lot more even than in previous defeats and there are positives which can be taken and worked on. Thanks also go to player of the match Andrea Wallace for stepping up from the seconds to help, due to what is becoming an all too familiar squad shortage for away games.

Next week sees Slaz take on Ben Rhydding 2s. Again this will not be an easy game as they are doing very well given their newness to the League.

Report: 16-02-2013 – Ladies 1st’s (2) v (3) Boston Spa 1st’s

March 5, 2013 by Slazenger HC

A double header of hard away games was on the menu for Slaz this weekend. After being soundly beaten by Boston Spa at home, Slaz were not expecting an easy ride and losing key player Katie Firth within the first few minutes of the game did not help their cause.

Boston Spa took full advantage of the situation and managed to score first. It was an evenly matched battle however and with both teams having no subs there was no room for injury, so when Amanda Sowerby was felled and obtained what she thought was a back injury, she was forced to struggle on. The team had to be quickly re-organised in order to hold on until half time.

After the break Slaz almost immediately conceded their second goal and it looked like an uphill task for Slaz until a great strike by Sarah Hobbs was put into the goal by Hannah Field. After a bit of a discussion between the two, Hannah insisted that she should claim it as she ‘needed the money’. Fodder – are you bribing that child??

At 2-1 things were starting to look up for Slaz however not for long as Boston Spa managed to get a third goal. Again a spirited comeback by Slaz saw the injured Amanda Sowerby convert from a short corner to narrow the gap again to 3-2. Despite heavy pressure from Slaz in the last period of the game and a superb performance from player of the match Katie Browne rising to the occasion when Katie F was injured, the scoreline remained and Slaz went away disappointed but knowing that they had all tried their best.

The team wished good luck to their England Masters Triallists Eleanor Townend and Amanda Sowerby however as they drove home the jury was out as to whether they were looking forward to the Chapeltown game the next day!

Report: 10-11-2012 – Ladies 1st’s (1) vs. (3) Boston Spa 1st’s

November 19, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazengers were up against Boston spa this week, always a close game between the two teams, but this week Boston got the win. They scored a goal early in the first half, but Slazengers came back strong, with some excellent cross pitch passing by Katie Firth, but Slazengers just couldn’t score despite some close chances from Sarah Cooper and Mandy Sowerby.

Boston scored a second goal before half time, but shortly into the second half Mandy Sowerby scored a screamer, the ball flew passed the keeper and into the back netting.

Slazengers then got a goal disallowed, Sarah Hobbs took on several players and put the ball in the back of the net, we are still unclear as to why the goal was disallowed. Shortly after, Boston finished the game off with a 3rd goal.

A disappointing results for Slazengers, especially when we had moments of excellent play. The Smeatons worked well together holding up the defence and creating chances for the inners, Claire Mills and Katie Firth. Sarah Cooper was really unlucky to put away her break away run, but the keeper for Boston had a good game and managed to keep us out.

Report: 29-09-2012 – Mens 4th’s (1) vs. (3) Boston Spa 4th’s

September 30, 2012 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger’s mens 4th’s played their first ever league fixture this weekend against Boston Spa 4th’s. The team played well but were beaten by the combination of experience and teamwork; signs of a well established team.

The game started promisingly for Slazenger. Fast and consistent passing made short work of the Boston Spa midfield, and very quickly the home side were pressing Boston’s defence. It was not long before a sequence of fast passes set up Ian Hedges to take it past the last defender and keeper within the first five minutes.
This goal seemed to wake Boston up, and although Slaz pressed hard, there was a solid battle to control midfield. The combination of new players and up-and-coming juniors did well to hold their own, with some notable work by James Higgins in midfield and Dave Gascoigne and John Toon frustrating the visitors.

However, the inexperience of the side did tell, with loose marking allowing players to infiltrate Slaz’s defence and create opportunities. Captain and goalkeeper Giles “Fodder” Field, pulled off some impressive saves to prevent an equaliser. However, it was only a matter of time before the side conceded from a well worked opportunity.

A second goal in the second half put Slazenger under further pressure, to which they duly responded. Some hard work up front by Darren Buttery and Robert Caan paid off with a short corner. It looked to have been converted to a goal by Paul Johnson, but was stopped by a defender’s foot on the line. A penalty flick was given, and Ian Hedges stepped up (or was it that everyone else took a big step back?). The flick was saved, preventing an equaliser.

Slaz continued to work, but could not find the flowing form which had worked so well in the early stages of the match, with Boston Spa scoring a third put the result beyond doubt.

While a young and inexperienced side, the side showed great potential which will hopefully develop throughout the season.

Report: 26-02-2011 – Ladies 1st’s (3) vs (1) Boston Spa 1st’s

February 26, 2011 by Slazenger HC

This top of the table clash started exciting with Boston Spa scoring from the off in 25 seconds, Slazengers hadn’t even woke up. This goal was trickled through the legs of keeper Eleanor.Slazengers counted this by putting great attacking pressure on with a great run by Claires Mills who slipped the ball to Katie Firth on the penalty spot and she made no doubt in putting it in the back of the net. The score was one all at half time.

In the Second Slazengers continued to dominate and this paid off half way through the second half with an equaliser from Mandy Sowerby. The goal was from the back line on a very tight angle and somehow squeezed into the goal.

Boston did equalise shortly after, but this was disallowed due to it hitting the attackers foot on the way in.

Slazengers sealed the game ten minutes later when Mandy got her second goal of the game with a well executed short corner. The mixture of power and precision made sure that the ball could not be stopped by Keeper or Defenders. Mandy was also awarded Man of the Match for her great skills and effort throughout the game.

Slazengers remain Top of the league after Sundays game with two games in hand on Boston Spa and one game in hand on Doncaster who are their nearest rivals.

Slaz Stay Cool to Keep Top Spot

An excellent team performance saw Slazengers clinch victory in their top of the table clash at Boston Spa.Slazengers started slowly and it took a few dangerous Boston attacks to wake up the travelling side. Slazengers struck first with a well-taken goal by Ailish Hendry on the open stick, but Boston Spa were soon level with a straight strike from a short corner. The Horbury side were not deterred and took the lead again before half time – Jessica Rudge bundling the ball over the line in a scrappy goal-line scramble. The second half started much the same way as the first half did, with Boston attacking in numbers. The home side capitalised on some missed Slazenger tackles and the second Boston goal was a well-taken flick over Eleanor in goal. This seemed to spur Slazengers into action and Ailish Hendry scored midway through the second half with an outstanding reverse stick goal from the edge of the D. The fantastic team spirit in the Slazenger side meant that everyone pulled together in the dying minutes to ensure another victory.

It was a fairly even game and a draw would perhaps have been a fair result, but the spectacular winning goal by Ailish deserved to be the difference between the two sides. Coach Steve Wood must also take a large share of the credit for this victory, with his tactical masterclass, which showed that homework on the opposition does pay off.

Report: 20-10-2007 – Mens 2nd’s (5) vs. (4) Boston Spa

October 20, 2007 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger Mens 2nd’s put in a five-star performance to return to winning ways with a 5-4 victory over Boston Spa at the weekend.

But the Horbury side started slowly and found themselves two goals down within the first ten minutes as the visitors came flying out of the traps.

But goals from Christian Oldroyd and Rob Stephens soon got Slazenger back on level terms in the first half before starting the second half in rampant form with man-of-the-match Neil Croucher and Simon Chamberlain running the name from midfield.

And within five minutes of the restart, Tim Carr bagged his tenth goal of the season before Eddie Taylor extended the hosts advantage and Chamberlain also had time for a second to help move Slazenger up to second in the league.

Report: 23-11-2002 – Mens 2nd’s (4) vs. (0) Boston Spa 2nd’s

November 23, 2002 by Slazenger HC

Slazenger got off to a slow start, but eventually found top gear.

The visitors thwarted a lot of the Wakefield side’s attacks and it took until ten minutes before the break for Slazenger to break the deadlock. A well-worked short corner was drilled home by Paul Wiper.

The second half was a totally different story. As Boston Spa tired Slaz started to dominate. They took the game by the scruff of the neck following two goals from Alec Gilston. One was from a short corner and the other came ten minutes into the second period after a fine move involving David Kaye and Jonathan White.

And five minutes from time, Gavin Kaye scored a pearler to round off the scoring, thundering a shot into the net. Neil Hutchings was voted man of the match.
